Ernst Melchior fired Austria ahead, but Alf Ramsey equalised from the spot with the first penalty ever scored at Wembley, and Nat Lofthouse headed England in front. Ernst Stojaspals late penalty earned Austria a share of the spoils in a game that featured Arthur Miltons only cap and Ivor Broadis debut.
